Limbang, what's next?

Having been out of the loop with Bruneian politics, I just read that Limbang is now officially Malaysia's property and Brunei can no longer have claim to it, despite the fact it is 45 miniutes away, we speak the same way, shared a similar history and we were once one. It's funny though that all the articles I read, no one considers how Limbang feels, being tugged away by both countries like a, uh, tug-of-war rope?

Well not only will this make things more awkward for us, it once again seals Malaysia's position in Southeast Asia as a central actor who exerts influence and power over its neighbours. Personally, I think we had no choice BUT to 'drop territorial claim over Limbang', since this problem is simply not about land or people, but its about more complex issues relating to Limbang's economy, maritime claims, um, the sea in general, pirates that roam around in the sea, and maybe even the schools of fish in the sea. So the issue is centrally about our most precious resource: Water. And Brunei just lost some, and Malaysia just gain a good amount.

I am not about to embark on a nationalist rant and talk about why Limbang, population 40,000, should be with Brunei. Firstly because I should be doing work right now and nationalist is a slippery term anyway. And secondly, I trust in the spirit of co-operation, as newspapers seem to highlight. Basically we're being a team player, albeit the one that sits on the bench waiting for his time to shine. Team player nonetheless. And generally I trust the policies we pursue - we're still basically trying to find our place in the world I tell myself.

In any case, the main point of this post is not to look at this event bitterly. Think of it this way, we didn't lose Limbang, Limbang lost us hehe.
